About
Saliha Kaytan’s works reflect a search for balance between the abstract depths of the inner world and the structural order of the outer world. In her automatist paintings, the artist follows the spontaneous flow of the subconscious; in her windowed constructions, she contains this overflowing inner energy within geometric boundaries. These two poles function as complementary breaths within her artistic universe — one directed inward, the other outward.
Through her use of circles, boxes, and windows, Kaytan questions how humans perceive themselves. She explores how much of the inner world can be seen from the outside, and how much of the outer world seeps inward. In this sense, her windows are not merely formal elements but thresholds — passages between consciousness and the unconscious.
On her automatist surfaces, the unconscious speaks freely; nothing is planned, everything simply happens. Yet at a certain moment, the artist interrupts the overflow — she opens a window, draws a boundary, defines a form. This is both the return of control and the instinct to protect the inner world. For Kaytan, art oscillates between these two states: surrender and direction.
Her works reveal a state of consciousness swinging between the desire to hear one’s inner voice and the need to protect oneself from the chaotic multiplicity of the world. Each piece marks a new beginning — a pursuit that is never fully completed.
